ANKARA: A high-speed train hit a railway engine and crashed into a pedestrian overpass at a station in the Turkish capital Ankara on Thursday, killing nine people and injuring 47 others, officials said.
The train, carrying 206 passengers, was heading from Ankara to the central Turkish province of Konya and was not due to stop at Marsandiz.
At least two cars derailed, hitting the station’s overpass which then collapsed onto the train.Three engine drivers and six passengers were killed in the crash, Turhan said.The accident occurred at about 06:30 local time (03:30 GMT).
Several emergency service personnel can be seen attending the crash in reflective jackets and helmets as they scour the debris for signs of life.
Search and rescue efforts are still under way. The Ankara state prosecutor’s office says it has launched an official investigation into the cause of the crash.
Turkey’s worst rail disaster in recent history was in July 2004 when 41 people were killed and 80 injured after a high-speed train derailed in the northwestern province of Sakarya.
